Business continuity planning used to be dominated by fire drills, backup generators, and offsite data copies. But for most businesses today, the single point of failure that will actually take you offline is far more mundane: the connection between your building and the outside world. When that link drops, the ripple effects reach nearly every part of the operation.
The good news is that connectivity resilience is one of the most tractable problems in your continuity plan. You can engineer around it deliberately, test it on your own schedule, and size your investment to match what an hour of downtime actually costs you. Where Connectivity Fits in Your Continuity Plan
A business continuity plan (BCP) and its close cousin, the disaster recovery (DR) plan, exist to answer one question: when something breaks, how do you keep serving customers and how fast do you recover? Most plans catalog risks like power loss, hardware failure, cyberattacks, and staff unavailability. Connectivity belongs on that same list, and it often deserves top billing because so many other systems now depend on it.
Think of your connection as the foundation the rest of your recovery plan stands on. Your cloud backups, your remote-work fallback, your VoIP failover, your ability to reach a vendor during a crisis, all of it assumes the network is up. RTO and RPO in Plain English

Recovery Time Objective (RTO) is how long you can tolerate a system being down before the impact becomes unacceptable. For connectivity, this is simply: how many minutes or hours can you operate with no internet or no phones? For a retail counter or a clinic, the honest answer may be close to zero.
Recovery Point Objective (RPO) is how much data you can afford to lose, measured in time. It is usually framed around backups, but it applies to the network too. If your point-of-sale or order system queues transactions locally during an outage and syncs when the link returns, your effective data loss can be small even if the outage is long, provided you designed for it.
A tight RTO means you need automatic, fast failover to a second path. A tight RPO means you need systems that buffer or replicate locally so nothing is lost when the primary link drops.
What Actually Dies When the Network Goes Down
It helps to map the blast radius before you spend a dollar on redundancy. When your primary connection fails, expect the following to stop or degrade almost immediately:
- Payments. Card terminals, online checkout, and most modern point-of-sale systems need a live connection to authorize transactions. No link often means no revenue at the counter.
- Orders and fulfillment. Order intake, inventory lookups, shipping labels, and warehouse scanners frequently route through cloud services that go dark with the connection.
- Cloud applications. Email, CRM, accounting, file storage, scheduling, and collaboration tools all assume connectivity. An outage can freeze the workflows your staff rely on minute to minute.
- Voice. If your phones are VoIP or cloud-hosted, they die with the internet. Customers calling in hear nothing, and your team cannot reach vendors or dispatch.

Real redundancy is not one thing you buy; it is a stack of independent safeguards. Weakness in any layer can undo the others, so treat these as a set.
Carrier Diversity
Running two circuits from the same provider protects you against a modem failure, but not against that carrier's regional outage or billing dispute. True carrier diversity means a primary and backup connection from genuinely different providers, so a problem at one does not take both down. Path and Entrance Diversity
Two carriers do you little good if both circuits enter your building through the same conduit and run down the same street, where one backhoe can sever everything. Path diversity means the physical routes back to the network are separate; entrance diversity means the cables physically enter your building at different points. Ask your providers to confirm this, because it is easy to assume and hard to verify after the fact.
Technology Diversity
Different transport technologies fail in different ways. Pairing a fiber line with a fixed-wireless or cable connection means a fault that affects one medium is unlikely to affect the other. Technology diversity reduces the chance that a single environmental cause takes out both links at once.
Wireless Backup
A cellular or fixed-wireless failover gives you a completely separate path that does not depend on your wired infrastructure at all. It may be slower than your primary, but a degraded connection that keeps payments and phones alive is dramatically better than nothing. For many businesses this is the most cost-effective insurance available.
Power and UPS for Network Gear
None of the above matters if your router, firewall, and switches lose power. Put your network equipment on an uninterruptible power supply (UPS), and for longer outages consider generator coverage. A backup circuit that goes dark the moment the lights flicker is not a backup at all.
Document, Test, and Communicate
The most common failure in continuity planning is not a missing safeguard; it is an untested one. A failover path you have never exercised will surprise you at the worst possible moment.
Start by documenting the whole design: which circuits you have, who provides them, how failover is supposed to trigger, and who to call when something breaks. Keep that document somewhere you can reach it without the network, and keep the contact list current.
Then test on a schedule. Deliberately pull the primary link during a low-traffic window and confirm that traffic actually moves to the backup, that phones stay up, and that recovery is clean when you restore the primary. Testing is the only way to know your RTO is real rather than theoretical, and it surfaces misconfigurations before a customer does.
Schedule a failover test at least a few times a year, and always after any change to your carriers, hardware, or configuration.
Finally, prepare a communication plan for the outages you cannot prevent. Decide in advance how you will notify staff, how you will update customers, and which channels stay available when your primary systems are down. A pre-written message and a clear chain of command turn a scramble into a routine.
